V.2 - GETTING IT RIGHT!!
July 3, 2008

A few corrections in the July 3 issue of the Crier are in order..

  • I've always been bad at math and when I did the square root of our two Herbs, I made an error.  As you probably know, Herb Meyer, the tireless advocate for the disabled actually started the Easter Seals Day on the Bay.  Our other Herb (Myers) has been an active participant in this event and still obviously remains esteemed and prominent.  My apologies to both of you!
  • Jeff McQueen will still be in charge of the relocation of boats in advance of the Wooden Boat Show from CYC to SFYC, not AFC.  Sorry for that, and never trust Spellcheck!
  • The Easter Seals Luncheon on July 19th will only be for the participants in the fundraiser.  CYC members will still be able to enjoy the fine food offered at the Pelican Grill.
                                               HAVE A GREAT 4TH EVERYONE!!!

The Corinthian Goes Wooden

Just a reminder that on July 10-13, our friends, the Master Mariners bring the Wooden Boat Show to the quaint CYC harbor.  Invite your friends and neighbors (along with you, of course) to enjoy the beauty of these works of art.  On Saturday evening from 6:30 to 9:30, the Dining Room will be serving a Special Caribbean Buffet along with music to provide a great backdrop to the dinner and something to accompany those suffering from 'happy feet'.  And on Sunday, the Master Mariners Sailors Breakfast will be served from 7:30am to 9:30am.  If you miss breakfast or just suffer from an insatiable appetite, the Master Mariners Pelican Grill Lunch will be open from 11:30am to 2:30 pm.

Also, just in from our Rear Commodore, Sharon Marsh-Barr:

"Harbor tenants on A,B,C lines need to make plans to move their boats during the weekend of the Wooden Boat Show. Options include: Pittsburg Cruise-out, exchanging slips with one of the Wooden Boats or moving their boat to the San Francisco Yacht Club. Jeff McQueen is coordinating all boats moving to the AFC. We appreciate your cooperation. If you return to CYC before the show is over, you can drop a hook or grab a mooring. We will shuttle you into the Club so you can see the boats TOO."

A note to any CYC cowboys...keep your spurs at the ranch as these boats bruise easily.

Looking forward to seeing you at our Wooden Wonderland!

For the first time in a number of years, the CYC has entered four member boats in the prestigious Lipton Cup.  Thanks to John Dodge, here's some history on this event.

"Steeped in tradition, the Lipton Cup (actual name: Sir Thomas J. Lipton Perpetual Challenge Trophy) is an historical race series that takes place in many sailing venues around the country, where yacht clubs compete against each other with one boat representing each club in several handicap divisions. The trophies are pretty spectacular - see above. A CYC yacht, “Maybe”, won the first Lipton Cup in the bay area in 1934, and although many members have raced over the years, our last winner was Keith Buck in “Petard” in 1975." (Ed. note:  It's rumored that Skipper Buck was unable to defend his title the following year, having suffered an undisclosed injury while hoisting himself upon his own Petard.)

On July 19th, CYC will again be sponsoring the Easter Seals Day on the Bay from 8:30am to 2:00.  The Pelican Grill will also be serving lunch from 10:00 to 2:00pm.  Started by our esteemed member and prominent banker, Herb Meyer, this fundraising event drew over 130 Easter Seals clients and their companions sailing on a fleet of 30 boats.

I always like to call on people who have "been there and done that".  And I think Michael Moradzadeh captures the nuance of this fabulous event.  "For many Corinthians, this is a high point of the year, as we share our love of the water with developmentally disabled clients of Easter Seals. We turn the club over to the organization for an orientation and snack and break for the water as a few clients and their caregivers go out on each boat for a not-to-be-missed experience. It always seems that the sun shines a little brighter on the boats as they reluctantly head into the harbor in the early afternoon for lunch and bonhomie."

Midweek activities in the CYC Club 'Bistro' continue to thrive.  On Wednesday, July 9th, we will be visited by Firesteed Cellars from the Willamette (it's pronounced, Will-a'-mit, dammit!) Valley.  And the following week (July 16th) a taste of Italy will be the theme.  Our very able dining crew have really shown a knack of concocting small plate menus that are endemic (but not contageous) to the particular wine theme.  And, we always have our Thursday nights to reconvene over a more standard pub menu.  As an extra treat on Thursday, July 17th, Jazz Night at the Bistro returns with our good friends and home grown cool dudes, The Bill Canada Experience.  Always entertaining, Bill & Company will hold court and Bistro food will be served in the dining room for what is hoped to be an SRO audience.  Be There or Be Square!

Oh, and one more thing....don't forget Monday and Tuesday coctail hour at the Club Bar...THE CLASSIEST PLACE TO BE ON MAIN STREET!

Sail away to

Pittsburg CA...not Pittsburgh PA!!

Don't forget...Pittsburg awaits those just itching for a road, oops!, I mean boat trip.  The CYC Member Cruise-out happens on July 12-13.  Again, if you need to move your boat anyway for the Master Mariner's Wooden Boat Show, then why not Pittsburg?  Andrea and Joe Holko, your cruise leaders, will make sure you have a great time!

In my inaugural issue as Editor of the Corinthian Crier, I mentioned that the Crier is meant to be a timely communication vehicle that accepts and encourages input from any and all members.  Currently, we're working on creating a CYC email address to which you will be able to forward items and 'tidbits' for the Crier.  Until that mailbox is set up, you can send those items to tpcote@pacbell.net.  I forgot to include my email address last time, probably as a matter of self-preservation from the readership in the event I fell short of the mark.  The kind responses that I have received from a number of you have been greatly appreciated and I'll do my best to maintain some modicum of on-going bliss when the honeymoon is over!

Finally, I think we all would be remiss if we didn't extend our condolences to our Club Manager, Ingo Schreiber, for the loss Germany incurred in the finals of the Euro Football (Soccer) Championship last Sunday!  Unfortunately, after 44 years of trying, Spain got the best of the Germans and I'm sure Ingo has felt some pain so go easy on him this week, if you could!

July 9  Firesteed Cellars Willamette Valley, Oregon - Winemaker chat.

July 16 Italy No Gondola Required.  Great wines and paired dishes drawn from one of the world's finest cuisines.  Sadly, pizza-on-a-stick is not on the menu.

Is our Commodore proud or what?  Hot off the wire David Johnson reports:

"CYC - WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS -our 3rd time to beat TYC in 9 years with strong performances from all CYC sailors in 15 - 25 knot sailed off Tiburon Yacht Club .

Top finishers included Basic Instinct, Chica and Sabertooth. This is a team event and all CYC entrants helped our combined average of the spinnaker and non-spinnaker boats.

A great party at Tiburon Yacht Club afterwards with all of us taking advantage of thier new docks.

The trophy is sitting behind the bar for all to see. Start planning for next years regatta!

Thank you TYC Race Committee - you did a great job as always! (Harry, Sandra, Bill, Chris, Trio, Jill and others)."
And There's More...
Surprise, and her proud owners, Peter & Jytte Birnbaum led from start to finish in the Catalina 34 race this past weekend. In his distinct Danish accent, Peter is said to have shouted "Eat my wake!" to the competition and how true those words proved to be even if they didn't understand a word he was saying!Congratulations to Surprise for bringing yet another victory to the Corinthian!

More Fun!
CYC members and guests now are afforded the opportunity to enjoy the intimacy and camaderie of the CYC Club Bar 7 days a week.  On Mondays and Tuesdays between 5pm and 8ish, you now can get together for a pint of two with fellow members and friends.  Also, what better time is there to invite prospective club members to give them a sense of what we're so proud of! The Wednesday night Bistro & Wine Bar is well under way and appears to be quite popular in its early days.  If you haven't done so yet, treat yourself to an evening of wine tasting complimented by a small plate special menu of dishes paired to the wine theme of the week.

I just want to take a moment to personally thank Michael Moradzadeh, Allyn Schafer, and David Johnson for allowing me the opportunity to give something back to the Club.  (At least right now I want to thank them.  As I move into the abyss of deadlines and editorial challenges, I recognize that could change!)  I hope we can make this a community effort and encourage all our members to submit ideas, upcoming activities and events, and most of all, suggestions, that will make this online communique even better.  Also, I apologize for the delay in getting this first issue out, but as an old dog learning some new tricks, I moved a little slower this time around...it will only get better.  Finally, both Rosalyn and I have enjoyed the Corinthian Yacht Club immensely and in the relatively short period of time we've been members have developed some friendships that will remain with us for the rest of our days.  Thank you all for your support and let's have some fun this summer!!  TC

PS - You will note that I have referred you to www.cyc.org a number of times for additional information.  Obviously, we want you to use the CYC site whenever possible, but when I learn how to do it, I will also include URL links in the Crier...one of the new tricks I haven't picked up yet!

Hey dad, did you know that there are changing tables in both downstairs heads?  In the accessible stalls.  What's that?  You thought it was a mini-bar?  No, dad.  No.
We had a "soft" opening and a "grand" opening. Both were very pleasant, casual evenings. Now we have a "grande" opening coming up.  Argentina!  Quick, which club trophy has an Argentine theme?
  • June 18, Malbec, the hot Argentinean varietal
  • June 25, wines of Spain

Everyone likes birthdays.  Our nation's birthday is on a Friday this year.  We'll replace our usual Friday Night Race with the "Firecracker Regatta" (1 pm to 4 pm) and there will be a special Barbeque and dancing at 5!

Watch your email.  We have the draft race notice here and will post it in a day or two.  Midday race using the FNR courses.  Free to CYC and to FNR entrants.
If you did not stop in Pittsburg on the way to or from Tinsley last year, you may not know that it has been completely rebuilt and looks great.  The cruise formerly known as Martinez now will be going to Pittsburg.  Andrea and Joe Holko, your cruise leaders, promise a heck of a time.

Details will follow shortly.  I went to the marina website and saw that we have just missed the Splash Dogs Jumping Competition.  I have no idea what that means, but I bet you need real calm dogs for that.

Coté takes over Crier

Tom Coté is taking over the club's e-newsletter!  If you know Tom, you'll know this is a treat, for us at least!  And it's a ton of work for him.
Your former editor is heading across the Pacific, Med, and Atlantic over the next several months, making the Crier unworkable, unless we move the whole club to Barcelona.  Those eager to follow the antics of Corinthians in the Pacific Cup may visit their website and/or my blog.
Please give Tom a hand in both senses of the term.  I'd like to thank you all for having let me visit your computer screens from time to time. -- m

Race Committee Volunteers NEEDED!

2008 US SAILING Youth Championship

June 28, 29, 30 and July 1

The San Francisco Yacht Club is hosting one of the country's premier youth sailing regattas in 2008, the US SAILING Youth Championship.  The regatta will be held June 26th through July 1st.  Racing for the prestigious trophies of this event will be on June 29th, June 30th, and July 1st following a practice race on June 28th.  We need your help from June 28th through July 1st.

Approximately 150 sailors, between the ages of 15-19, are chosen for this event by US SAILING after review of their resumes.  The SFYC is prepared to welcome them, feed them and entertain them.  With your help, we will also provide the best on-the-water race management possible.

We need approximately 75 volunteers to staff our signal boats (start and finish boats) and mark set/support boats for each of the four days of racing.  We are also looking for volunteers on the support boats to track mark rounding.  If you are available, please respond to suziemoore@comcast.net and miller_marissa@yahoo.com by JUNE 6th with the dates you are available and your shirt size (Please do not respond to everyone to avoid email overload for all on this message!)  If you know of anyone else that may be interested in volunteering, please pass this message on.

On behalf of the San Francisco Yacht Club, Regatta Chairs Kyle Elliott and Ray Lynch, Principal Race Officers Bartz Schneider and Jeff Zarwell, and the on-the-water planning team for this event; our sincere appreciation for your consideration!

El Monkey beats el tiburon.

Kudos and thanks to the Drakes Bay team.  Go ahead, buy one a drink and ask them what happened... Wind, waves, Coast Guard, Fouled rodes, helicopters, cutters, midnight phone calls, no injuries, and a job well done. Hey, I have an idea, ask them at Wednesday Dinner!

Steve Macrostie of Macrostie wines will be here to present some of their great vintages.  What would go with that?  Food!

Sea scallops, pork medallions, Sonoma cheese plate, and the popular romaine spears.

Don't want that?  Grill your own burger!

Last week's "soft opening" was a hard success.  Back in the kitchen, Riley was working like a one legged kangaroo to get all the plates out.  We ran out of cous-cous and Michael E was drafted to make more (nine cups of cous cous, two cups of water, apparently).  We'll be there and hope you will too!

Wine Wednesdays start June 4, but ...
Bar is now open every day
As previously reported, the bar is open.  Yup, Monday through Sunday.  Or is it Wednesday through Tuesday.  5-8pm or longer if conditions warrant it.  So, here's the plan.  Go to a movie at the
Tiburon Playhouse.  Go with some fellow Corinthians (use the on-line roster to call them at http://my.cyc.org).  Then, and here is the cool part, you can go to your very own bar and have a beverage and discuss the movie.

Did you see Sex in the City? have a cosmo!
Here are a few more ideas:
Indiana Jones: Bourbon.  Neat. With Metamucil.
F'getting Sarah Marshall: Macrostie Chardonnay
What Happens in Vegas: WHooo! Strawberry Daiquiri
Juno: Six pack of bud and a virgin margarita
Sweeney Todd: Bloody Mary
Basic Instinct: Champagne.  See below.
I could go on, but I must pause to mention that this Wednesday is....

Why Wonder Down Under?

Light plates representing some great Aussie eating traditions (shrimp, lamb, salad).  If that does not set your billy a-boiling, grill your own burger.  Or just sit around and have a drink and complain, that's what the club is for after all.  Remember. It's a soft opening.  If we have to send out for pizza, we'll pretend it's Australian pizza.

June 11 (grand opening), Steve MacRostie of MacRostie Wines
  • June 18, Malbec, the hot Argentinean varietal
  • June 25, wines of Spain

Jan kicked butt.  Check it out.  The results, I mean.  Course took our sailors out to near TYC territory in preparation for friendship regatta.  Gloomy weather kept many home. but a spanking wind helped the participants knife through the water for a great time!

Coming up:
June 14: Friendship Regatta
5pm to 8pm, or longer if there's a good crowd.
On Mondays and Tuesdays. the usual nuts and crackers will be augmented by a bit of cheese and the like!  This is an experiment, so use it or lose it!
And aren't you glad I did not make a joke about nuts and crackers?

Oh yeah!  This should be good.  Based on our survey, and the good inputs of our staff and the flag, we've come up with what looks like a delectable program.  Ready?

Wine Wednesdays at the CYC Bistro
Each Wednesday a different winery or region will be featured at the bar.  Sometimes a winemaker will be there, sometimes it's just a region.  The Wednesday chef will provide appropriately complementary menu items or, in the Corinthian spirit, just order up a "grill-your-own" and prepare your meat as you like it.  You can have beer, too, if you want.
  • June 4 (soft opening), wines of Australia
  • June 11 (grand opening), Steve MacRostie of MacRostie Wines
  • June 18, Malbec, the hot Argentinean varietal
  • June 25, wines of Spain
What? No Mexican food?
Participate in on-the-water activities, golf, spa, warm water, the spirit of friendship, and more.  Swim, whale-watch, play cards, or just monkey around!

Everyone likes birthdays.  Our nation's birthday is on a Friday this year.  We'll replace our usual Friday Night Race with the "Firecracker Regatta" (1 pm to 4 pm) and there will be a special Barbeque and dancing at 5!
Then, of course, we can watch the crackers and nuts set off fireworks across the bay!

Heck, stay through the weekend.  Grill-your-own burger for lunch.  (at least there was last time we were there) Please give Fred a call if you have questions.  Thanks.

House a Youth

Our neighbors to the west, SFYC, are hosting the
US SAILING youth championships. June 26 to July 1.  They need help, particularly with housing youths.  THese are some of the best sailors in the country, nay the world, and are under fairly strict "good behavior" rules from US Sailing.  The kids will be at SFYC from 8am to 9 or 10 pm, so it's probably a pretty easy task.  For more information, Contact Commodore Johnson or SFYC Staff Commodore Bill Smith (Bill@sfyc.org)

  Opening Day Weekend Rocked!

A great time was had by all.  The club looked great, and we had enough Coast Guard assets in our waters to take over a small, poorly-run, Caribbean island.

As no islands presented themselves for Corinthian Conquest, we slaked our imperial ambitions with Mother Goose characters and adult beverages.

Speaking of Imperialism...

CINCO DE MAYO

Celebrates the defeat of the French in the Battle of Puebla.  Actually, it's a pretty remarkable story: Mexico owed France, Britain, and Spain a ton of money.  France decided to collect the debt by taking over the country.  Their first attempt was repulsed on May 5, 1862.  Although Maximillian, a relative of Napolean III, was eventually imposed as Emperor of Mexico, he got booted when the French withdrew in.. Am I boring you?  Okay...

MARGARITA TIME!!!!
Get on down to the club on Sunday May 4.  Party starts at 2 pm on the deck with an array of delectables.  From 2-5 we have music, "liberating beverages" and Thematic Snax!
Chips & Salsa...Nachos...Fish Tacos...Chicken Tostadas

 But Wait... There's more!
Cerveza: Corona, Dos Equis XX, Negra Modelo
Margaritas (On the Rocks or Blended)

Tequila Especial: Don Julio Amber, Herradura Reposado, Patron Silver
And, of course, Cinco de Mayo menu at Sunday Family Dinner
Just in time for Opening Day, we took delivery of 713 copies of the new Member Directory and Handbook.  Even as we speak, these are winging their way to you.  Sharp-eyed members will notice a few changes:

1.  More members than ever!
2.  A photo of the board all in one place (a first in recent history)
3.  Calendars have been moved to the website: www.cyc.org
4.  The member information is not only provided in paper form, but is also available on-line in the member zone at my.cyc.org.  You'll need to log in to see the good stuff.  You can do that if you know your own name and your CYC membership number.
5..  Through failure to catch a printer's error, the House Rules and Cruising Rules are only available on-line, also at my.cyc.org.

Thanks to the efforts of our Treasurer and the accounting department, logging in is now worth the effort!  You can see the Club's on-line records of your bill, as well as (soon to be completed) the accounting department's records of your address and other information.  This will serve as the source of the member directory in 2009.
Log-in tip:  If you don't know your username and/or password, you can log in if you (and we) know your first and last names and your membership number at http://my.cyc.org/user/cycpassword

You can also use your email address to log in.  If you don't have email, then you are probably not reading this, so... Never mind.  Go on a cruise or something.

Earth Day Factoids

Okay, almost Earth Night.  If you live or sail on the water, you think about the Earth more than if, say, you live in Detroit.  Or so we imagine.  For those wondering about CYC's activities, we have a few things we're happy about:

Michael Elinson reports:
1. Our deep fryer oil is recycled into bio-diesel.
2. Our to-go containers are made from sugarcane fiber. (bio-degradable)
3. Our plastic drinking "glasses" are made from corn. (bio-degradable)
4. Our glass bottles are recycled.

And if we're lucky...
5. Our yachts are powered by wind.

Opening Day Weekend

Almost here!  Visit the web and plan for it.

SATURDAY!!!

Harbor and House Rules Updates

CYC News - Wed, 07/02/2008 - 7:00am
The Corinthian Crier
April 3, 2008

Important messages from House and Harbor Committees

With Opening Day, Friday Nights, and the beginning of the most active portion of the year just in the offing, our House and Harbor committees have been working overtime to deliver some policy changes designed to get the club well-positioned for the upcoming years.  In many cases, the changes described are the result of several years of discussion and planning by a series of committees, flag officers, and Boards of Directors. These letters are also being sent in the monthly billings

From the House, as Vice Commodore Schafer reports, we are moving to a cashless club.  For members, this should not make a difference as house rules require use of membership number anyway.  Non-members will need to use credit cards, with cash acceptance severely restricted.  Our price structure is also being revised in a couple of ways: bar prices have been restructured with a more consistent margin calculation.  We are also following the lead of many other clubs and adopting a member/non-member pricing structure in the bar, so that you will see prices that are higher, but that will be equally offset by a "member discount" so that the two-tier structure has no effect on pricing.

House is also working on adding dining hours, fixing the gate, and other worthy projects as detailed in the letter below.  Allyn's letter stresses the need for reservations and the fact that tables must be claimed within 20 minutes of the reservation time to be honored.

From the Harbor, as HMC Chair Dave Rogers announces, the lengthy process of reunifying the waitlist has come to fruition, with rules for a unified list and a quicker notification process (the last element of the plan) having been adopted by the HMC with the blessing of the Board.  Dave's note is attached at the end of this email and also announces the launch of the new Harbor Management Committee site.

First, the Harbor Committee Letter

Important Harbor Notice

Effective June 1, 2008 there will be a change in the manner in which the Harbor Management Committee (HMC) assigns available slips.  In the past each of the lines in the harbor had individual line Wait Lists.  These individual line Wait Lists have now been combined into a single Wait List.  The purpose of the single Wait List is to provide CYC members based on their seniority on the single Wait List, the flexibility to decide on the size of vessel and qualifying slip they wish occupy when a slip is available for lease.  See the 2008 Harbor Rules & Regulations for additional information regards this issue.

The HMC has constructed the single Wait List seniority ranking using the individual line Wait Lists seniority ranking and available records.  On April 15th, a copy of the single Wait List will be sent by email to each listed member that has an email address as posted in the club roster.  This email will have a request for delivery receipt notice.  It is of utmost importance that the email recipient responds to the request for delivery receipt.  The HMC will use these responses to tally those members who received this email.  Any listed member, who does not receive this email on April 15, should promptly report his/her correct email address to the HMC at HMC@cyc.org and a single Wait List copy will be sent to these respondents

If you do not have email please notify the Committee as soon as possible by mail after reading this notice [editor's note, this is going in the paper billing] at:

      CorinthianHarbor Management Committee

      PO Box 592

      Tiburon Post Office, Ca, 94920

A copy of the single Wait List will be sent by U.S. mail to each responding member.

It is incumbent on every single Wait List member that feels an error in single Wait List seniority has been made to notify the Harbor Management Committee at HMC@cyc.org or by U.S. mail not later than May 15, 2008.  A review will be made of every response and a current single Wait List will be published on June 1, 2008 incorporating changes as required.  The single Wait List will be updated periodically.

The June 1, 2008 single Wait List will be posted on the Corinthian bulletin board outside the main office and on the club web site at http://www.cyc.org.  The Harbor Committee will notify members of the availability of a slip by email, U.S. mail as required, posting on the club web site and posting of a hard copy on the club bulletin board outside the main office.

The individual line Wait Lists presently have over 200 names.  It is the Committee’s understanding that many of those listed presently do not own boats since Corinthian rules allow any qualifying member to be listed irrespective of boat ownership.  DO NOT DESPAIR AT THE LENGTH OF THE SINGLE WAIT LIST.  Members should recognize that it is to their advantage to be listed on the harbor Wait List if they intend to purchase a boat in the future.  You may apply for listing on the single Wait List by completing a Wait List request form available in the main office.  See the new 2008 Harbor Rules & Regulations for additional information on the single Wait List.

There are also new classifications for the harbor slips providing maximum and minimum dimensions of a vessel that may be considered for slip occupancy.  See the new 2008 Harbor Rules & Regulations for additional information.

The new 2008 Harbor Rules & Regulations are published on http://www.cyc.org and in the 2008 Members’ Handbook.  A copy of these new Rules & Regulations will also be posted on the Club bulletin board located on the harbor deck adjacent to the harbor master’s office.

David A. Rogers

HMC Chair

From the Vice Commodore

Members of the Corinthian Yacht Club of San Francisco,

We are rapidly approaching my mid-term as your Vice Commodore, and I would like to inform you of several new changes being implemented by your House Committee. In case you haven’t noticed, our club is experiencing some growing pains, not at all a bad thing, but some new policies and procedures are needed so that we all continue to receive the same amazing service and attention we have all come to expect at our club. However, changes are often accompanied by learning curves, and we will all need to bear with our staff, our fellow members, and our guests while we familiarize ourselves with these new procedures and ultimately streamline into fewer and more efficient new ones.

We have more members than ever before enjoying our wonderful club, and along with all these great new faces has come expanded patronage, occasionally resulting in waits or the inability to accommodate some parties for dinner on a Friday or Saturday night without reservations. As always, our extraordinary staff will do their best to accommodate anyone wanting to dine in the member dining room, but please help them by properly estimating the size of your party and your dining time, and then calling ahead for reservations whenever you are able. And remember we have an online reservation system for our club events, and you’re House Committee is investigating better and easier ways to make reservations for dining. To help serve more members, the House Committee has revised a longstanding policy, to not hold any table past 20 minutes from the reservation time (this policy previously applied only to window tables). Also, please remember to call and cancel any dinner reservations you do not intend to keep, so that others may be seated in your absence.

In order to streamline how we are paid by non-members that visit our club, we are going cashless. We understand our service may slow a bit while our staff familiarizes themselves with this new procedure, but not taking cash removes several risks our club faces every time we open a cash drawer. During the first few Friday Night Races, we will have a single cash drawer available until the word gets out to visiting racers to carry a credit card with them in their foulies. This new policy should in no way affect members who per our House Rules may only use their club accounts for individual purchases.  Each time a credit card (or previously cash) is accepted for an individual purchase, the transaction appears on our books as a non-member charge, and we must all be mindful that accepting too much non-member business could jeopardize our non-profit status.  Members can, however, use credit cards for paying monthly balances (clearly tied to a membership number), at which time you get to claim all those bonus points or miles that you are entitled to!  In an effort to emphasize the importance of this practice, the existing House Rules have recently been modified to include stronger language to ensure members do not use their credit cards to pay for individual purchases.

Another new policy the House Committee is embracing is 2-tier bar pricing, similar to many other yacht clubs, in which non-members will pay a higher price than members for their drinks. As part of our extensive 2-tier pricing evaluation, we also discovered that some of our sales margins, mainly for higher-end wines and premium liquors, fell far outside our already generous range; so you may observe modest price adjustments targeted at reasonably narrowing those gaps.  In order to implement two-tier pricing in a fashion which will be the least conspicuous to our non-member guests, we will be raising prices 25% across the board, then providing an instantaneous 20% discount (do the math, it comes back to the original price every time) to members charging their drinks to a CYC number. This calculation will bring the listed drink price back down to our familiar member bar price and will be reflected immediately on the receipt you sign when you first open a tab, as well as on your final bill if you request a copy. As always, we will continually endeavor to offer a wide selection of beers, wines and liquors at various and reasonable price points for our members and guests.

Also in the planning stages is extended hours for us all to enjoy our club. In a cooperative effort CCD (the catering and food service arm of our club), the House Committee, and the Finance Committee are weighing the pros and cons of opening for Saturday brunch, Wednesday evenings, and Friday lunches. CCD has recently circulated a survey that revealed some interesting comments and suggestions, and we are crunching the numbers to see just what days and what meals our membership will support. At least some of these new dining opportunities are expected to become available as we head into the summer months.

We will soon have newly installed entrance gate card readers and a security camera system to make our club property more secure. I realize the gate seems to have been broken forever (a replacement card reading system was a complicated choice for us to make), and half of Tiburon has realized our lot is a convenient place to park. This free parking for non-members will be ending shortly when we are all issued new “skinny” gate cards to open our gates.

Another improvement in our bar is being made possible by a generous donation made by Bill Stucky that will allow us to install a multimedia entertainment system at the opposite corner of our member bar from the existing system.  This system will be capable of showing our club races, pictures of our club events, the internet, oh yea and TV on a flat screen above the North West end of the bar. Please thank Bill for his generous gift to our club.

Please remember, this is your club! I and the House Committee are always available to hear your new and great ideas about how we can improve your time spent at Corinthian Yacht Club. Please remember that with over 600 members we can not always please everyone with a special need or request, after all it’s always challenging to accommodate a party in formal attire along with those in foul weather gear, but we will always give it the ol’ Corinthian try!

Thank you all for your continued support.

Your 2008 House Committee and Vice Commodore, Allyn Schafer

We have a suite of events coming up. Thursday, April 3, will be a race committee orientation, with special emphasis on spotting and recording, but also a review of the flags, guns, and sequence. Time permitting, shotgun demonstration will also be had for those who have not been drinking. This will be at 6:00 in the dining room. Michael Moradzadeh is conducting it. Contact Lesley Stanford or Donal Botkin for more information or to sign up

CLUB RACE

The First event in the now-classic, almost 2-year-old, Corinthian Challenge Cup series will be April 5. This will be a series of three short races in front of the clubhouse. Why this format, you ask? Two reasons. First, it puts a premium on starting and boathandling. So we are preceeding it with a clinic on starting and turning at the marks, especially in, oh, I dunno, Raccoon Strait.

The second reason is that there appears to be a shift in racing toward this format: a series of quick crowd-pleasing races in view of the deck (bar?). Think about it, little bunnies. you race to victory while friends watch admiringly from the bar. Women swoon and men grow thoughtful at your masterly boathandling and almost glacial cool as "beer for brains" from another club cuts you off and you avoid disaster while winning the Aulde Cuppe for CYC. Can't you just taste it? Can't you??

Well, that's what it is about. Visit the race page to get all the details. Sign up and come to the clinic.

Website Beautification

We've changed out the colors on the CYC website to follow the season. Enjoy the light, airy, palette of blues, aquas, and, um, blues. There are a few substantive changes as well: We (finally) have the new bylaws and harbor rules posted. The directory will be updated shortly, and we are working on online statement access (only one member has it right now. Guess who it is?)

Selling the Clubhouse

As you know, maintaining the club is an expensive proposition. Commodore Johnson has decided to sell the clubhouse in order to keep up with the expensive upgrades we will need to make. "With global warming we're likely to be underwater in 20 years anyway," he said. Members are requested to collect any stray items from the building, which will become a combination Trader Joe's and Hooters, by next April 1.

Opening Day

April 26 and 27 sees our Opening Day Weekend. The 26 is our boat decorating contest and generally good party time at the club, and the 27 is the blessing of the fleet with all pomp and circumstance. Check 'em both out. Reserve in advance for eating, and you need to get your guests on the list IN ADVANCE if you want them to access the club on Sunday.
