IMPORTANT!!
Tinsley Island Cruise Update

Next Monday 9/8 is the deadline for ordering embroidered baseball caps and cruise flags for participants in this year’s Tinsley Island Cruise. These gifts display an Olympic style logo incorporating the 4 yacht club burgees embroidered on them. Both are “top of the line” gifts that cruisers will enjoy during the event.

The immediate issue is that Bill Giachino needs to get the CYC order submitted ASAP. Thus far we have approximately 40 cruisers signed up on the web site, but we expect more than that will be attending, but simply haven’t signed up yet.

To ensure you that you receive your commemorative hats and cruise flags, we urge you to sign up at www.cyc.org NOW if you're planning on participating in this year's cruise.  You may also contact Bill at (916) 215-0034 or www.ngbg@sbcglobal.net if you have any questions.

Congratulations to the Corinthian Challenge IV Winners!

On Saturday, the Corinthian Challenge IV was hotly contested and the results have been posted on the CYC website.  Our hearty congratulations go out to Peter Birnbaum, Skipper of 'SURPRISE', for garnering first place in front of 'BASIC INSTINCT' in the Over 30 foot class.

In the Under 30 foot class, 'DRAGONFLY' with Kevin Cole at the helm took first place and John Colvin's 'SUPERCALIFRAGILISTIC' came in second.

Thanks to all sailors for continuing to make this a great event and we hope to see you all in the last Corinthian Challenge race of 2008, scheduled for November 1st.

Tailgate Parties New Addition to Corinthian Monday Night Football

Tailgate Parties at the Monday night football games? You bet your sweet bippy!!  AlIyn Schafer has arranged to have a gas BBQ set up for CYC members and guests to use where everyone will have the opportunity to try and outdo each other with their favorite tailgate recipes.  Also, don't forget the bar will be open and showing Monday Night Football with complementary hot dogs and chili for those who donʼt want to cook their own food.

With a limited staff on hand the cleanup will be a member participation event. So make sure if you plan on cooking on the grill to bring paper plates or your own dishes.

Cruising With the Commodore On Loreto Bay...
Don't forget to sign up for this year's CYC Commodore's Cruise to Loreto, Mexico on the Baja Peninsula.  The dates are September 11th to the 16th at the exciting Discover Loreto Bay Resort.  To sign up, contact Cindi or Fred @ 415 381-4646 or click on www.travelinmarin@aol.com.

For those who didn't see the last Crier, here's some info about Loreto Bay...

Discover Loreto Bay is perfectly situated, tucked in the shadow of the Sierra de la Giganta mountain range on the shimmering Sea of Cortés. Discover Loreto Bay is near the historic fishing village of Loreto in Baja California Sur, Mexico. This is a magical place, a truly multicolored oasis where the purple hues of the mountains contrast with the sparkling blue sea and sky.

Adventures await you around every corner at Loreto Bay. Spend an afternoon at the Loreto Marina, on sailboat or "panga" boat, and tour the numerous nearby islands. Take in the dramatic, picturesque scenery and get close to dolphins, sea lions, pelicans, and even blue whales. Nearby hiking trails wind through the Sierra de la Giganta mountains, and world-class fishing can be found in the renowned Sea of Cortés, which is home to thousands of species of marine wildlife.

Uncover the beauty. Recover your senses. Discover Loreto Bay and learn even more by going to www.discoverloretobay.com.

Make sure you contact Kim Schafer if you have any inkling to help plan out the 2009 CYC Social Calendar.  Our events are great because of the hard work and inventiveness of our membership.  If you have the time, we've got a job for you on the Entertainment Committee.

In another moment of personal indulgence, I just want to pass on my condolences to Rosalyn Brandt and her mother, Dorothy Solomon.  Dorothy's partner of 25 years, Joe Kallin, passed away on September 1st.  While not members, Joe and Dorothy thoroughly enjoyed the CYC and many of you were very kind to take the time to sit with them and make them feel so very welcome.  It's that kind of stuff that makes CYC such a great place!  THANK YOU!!!!

Start the long Labor Day weekend off with the Corinthian Challenge.  If you're not scheduled to sail in this signature CYC event, at least come over to the Club and enjoy the residual fun we always seem to have around any event.

The End of Summer Soiree Happens on Monday, September 1st!

This Monday, September 1st, the inaugural CYC End of Summer Soiree starts a new tradition in Labor Day celebrations at the Corinthian.   Beef and chicken tacos coupled with salsa and chips will be the free fare of the day and tasty margaritas will be the drink of the day.  You will also be able to relish in the great sounds of the Steel Band.  And, of course, you may order whatever you like from the CYC bar which will be open from 10:00am - 6:00 pm.

Help make this new event a rousing success by joining us on the deck this coming Monday!

Annual TCW Fashion Show Unveils on September 26th

The 2nd Annual TCW Fashion Show is slated for Friday, September 26th with this year's theme being "Boutique
Showcase 2008".  Take this opportunity to revel in the latest fashions offered by local boutiques that are only a credit card away.  A talented lineup of beautiful and interesting models walking the plank.  Oops!  I mean trodding the runway should add to the fun and, in some instances, encouragement to keep their day job!

Are You Into Entertainment?

Kim Schafer is in the hunt to recruit any and all aspiring event planners amongst our ranks!  It's hard to believe, but it's already time to start planning for CYC's 2009 events.  Of course they actually start in 2008, with New Year's being the big kick-off!  We have plenty of fun events to plan and can use help of any degree, from managing an entire event to helping brainstorm or decorate!  Plus, it's a great way to get to know your fellow Corinthian's and have some fun!  If interested in becoming involved, please contact Kim Schafer at (415) 435-2717 or kschafer@bechtel.com.

Corinthian Monday Night Football Kicks Off on Monday, September 8th!

Part of watching football is hearing the roar of the crowd....the smell of the dogs....the free flow of beer!  Even with HD television, that's hard to replicate in your den.  On the other hand, the CYC Pigskin Club comes real close to being there.

The season begins on Monday, September 8th, with a 'double-header'.  At 4:00 that afternoon, it's the Vikings versus the Packers.  A longstanding rivalry to determine which town has suffered the most brain damage from the frigidity of the NorMidWest.  Then move westward to view another great rivalry as the Denver Broncos meet take on the Oakland Raiders beginning around 7:15pm.  Now with two TV sets, great seats are always available and complementary Chili and Hot Dogs will be provided at the no-host bar.

Also, we hope you will continue to patronize our Wednesday and Thursday Bistro night events.  We are promised continued surprises on the wine and food front on Wednesday evenings and on Thursday, our traditional 'pub grub' with periodic new additions will be awaiting you.

Cruising With the Commodore On Loreto Bay...
This year's CYC Commodore's Cruise is destined for Loreto, Mexico on the Baja Peninsula.  From September 11th to the 16th you will have the opportunity to enjoy all the amenities of the Discover Loreto Bay Resort.  To sign up, contact Cindi or Fred @ 415 381-4646 or click on www.travelinmarin@aol.com.

Hope all you racers are getting excited about the upcoming Corinthian Challenge.  It's just around the corner on Saturday, August 30th.  A great way to start the long weekend and a signature CYC event.  Any questions?  Contact Sharon Marsh Barr at 415 806-5134, marshbarr@yahoo.com

The CYC Armchair Quarterback Club Warms Up for the Upcoming Football Season!

Just as the Summer Olympics are ending and the fear of being berift of being entertained by some healthy sports programs, the NFL commences and Monday night at the CYC bar really gets going!

The season begins with not one, but two games on Monday, September 8th.  At 4:00 that afternoon, the Cheeseheads are matched up against the Hornheads (translation:  the Green Bay Packers vs. the Minnesota Vikings.  If that doesn't fire you up, the Denver Broncos meet the ominous Oakland Raiders beginning around 7:15pm.  Share in the comfort and warmth of our little pub, enjoy some stadium-type grub and maybe even place a friendly wager or two on the game.

This year we will have double the number of large screen TV sets, thus providing more flexibility in terms of seating capacity and location.

Wednesday and Thursday theme Bistro will continue and Michael and Lair have promised more surprises as we move into our Fall season.  Maybe some comfort food like Mom used to make (except not as burnt)coupled with sustaining fluids to bring fire to the belly and hair to the chest!

Plans for this year's newly crafted CYC Labor Day event are well underway.  On Monday, September 1st, the CYC End of Summer Soiree will offer flavorful tacos (gratis), margarita's (non-gratis), the Steel Band (very very gratifying) and no knuckleheads (personnae non gratis).  Alcoholic and non-alcoholic lubrications from the CYC bar will be available from 10:00am - 6:00 pm.

Come join us and enjoy that well deserved day off from work.  And for those of you who have been doing that every day for years, we're jealous!!

  • The Corinthian Women invite you to join them at their Annual Luncheon & Fashion Show on Friday, September 26th.  This year's theme is "Boutique Showcase 2008" and you will have a chance to view the latest fashions from local shops modeled by some of our more talented and not-so-shy members.  More to come in future Crier issues.
  • Commodore's Cruise to Loreto Bay Mexico coming up September 11-16th.

Hard to believe that we're almost into September, but that doesn't mean we need to lose the Summer attitude.  Hope you've all enjoyed a wonderful and safe summer.  Your support and participation in CYC events is what makes this place rock.  Keep it up...and don't forget to throw some news and ideas our way to keep this publication fresh and fun!

If you're heading over to the Encinal Yacht Club, you're in for a weekend of grins!  Check in with Trip Ames (415 435-1602) or Jeff Barnes (415 250-8832) to see if there's still space to join in the debauchery.  There's a one-time cruise charge of $10 per person which covers the special event and a great gift to bring home to the kids, in-laws, or ex-partners.

If you're inclined to make last minute decisions, you also have the option of motoring to the EYC where next door there's the Marina Village Inn (510 523-9450)

The fine print:  Bikini ’s and thongs are permitted subject to prior approval by the CYC cruise committee; Speedos are strictlyprohibited except for skinny Australians.

The CYC Tavern is Always Open for Your Convivial Enjoyment!

In the event you may have been held hostage by a group of blind and deaf mutes in the bowels of a cave this past week, you may not be aware of the fact that we are in the midst of the fabulous 2008 Olympic Games emanating from the mysterious and fascinating land of China.  The next best venue if you were unable to attend the Games is our CYC Drinking and Dining establishment.

With our large screen TV sets, you are able to witness some pretty exotic views of things we simply won't get into right now.  Suffice it to say, the Olympics appeal to a variety of visual and sporting interests!  You track and field enthusiasts know that those events begin next week.  Monday and Tuesday start off with drinks and maybe even some very light snacks.  Next Wednesday, Lair and Michael promise us a potpourri of favorite wines from the past and fitting victuals to accompany the wine.  Thursday is our very popular Bistro Night.  Got nothing to do next week?  Come down to the Club.  Have plans?  Cancel 'em and come down to the Club!

This year CYC Labor Day event will be known as the "CYC End of Summer Soiree".  Replete with a zesty taco bar, margarita's, and a band from 2:00 - 5:00pm (maybe they'll play our favorite Sinatra song, "Strangers in the Noches"), you will have yet another opportunity to kick up your heels and share in all the fun we Corinthians are well known for.  Libations from the CYC bar will be available from 10:00am - 6:00 pm.

Make your own hardshell taco's with a choice of chicken, pork, or beef with all the trimmings supported by an ample supply of chips and salsa.

We'll have more in next week's Crier including, hopefully, the cool flyer that our Belle, Tinker, has created.  Just in case I don't overcome my computer illiteracy by then, you can see Tinker's creative effort at www.cyc.org.
Come Hear John Connolly at Next CYC Speaker Series

If you see this Crier before 7pm this evening (Thursday), don't forget to come over and listen to John Connolly tell us how to successfully navigate the tricky waters off the California Coast.  This latest CYC Speaker Series event will commence at 6pm and John will begin his talk and video presentation around 7pm.  A buffet dinner will be served for a modest fee.

  • In addition to serving as the Communications Officer for this year's Pacific Cup race to Hawaii, Michael Maradzadeh served on the crew of Valis.  Busy boy, that Michael!  An article providing much more detail on his experiences will be appearing in the next Crier.  If you don't want to wait that long, just buy Michael an exotic rum drink at the Club and he'll fill you in on everything, and more!
  • Also, another CYC member, Chip Mageath, sailed his new R/P 45, Criminal Mischief, which was recently christened at CYC to a nice finish as well.
  • It appears that Jim Erskine, who skippered Kira, has officially been awarded 2nd place in his division of the Lipton Cup.  Congratulations, Jim and thanks for giving us some more silver to keep clean!

     Upcoming Events

Special thanks to Michael Moradzadeh for putting out a special Olympics issue during my absence.  I hope you took heed and saw the opening ceremony of the Olympics at the Club.

We had our own version of the Olympics with the wonderful wedding of Rosalyn's son and new daughter-in-law, Graham & Talia Brandt.  One of the few good reasons to miss all the fun at CYC!

Watch the Games in the Bar!

Vice Commodore Allyn says that the TV will be set to OLYMPICS for the duration of the games.  Come watch all the cool summer games.  Fencing, rhythmic gymnastics, bicycle motocross, badminton, and oh yes... Sailing.

You name it, and the top athletes in the world will be in the bar.  Or at least on the TV in the bar.  And on the PC screen on the other side of the bar.  So come on down.

Will there be special food?  Well, Michael E is experimenting with onion rings.  Remember: Bar open 7 days a week (that's every day).  Dining Wednesday through Sunday.  Oh yeah, do you love this club or what?

Opening Ceremony gets covered tonight at 7:30.  Check out the TV schedule and also the on-line coverage.  Heyyy... wait a minute... Can this be true? No coverage of sailing but six channels of beach volleyball?  Where are our priorities here?

Okay, new plan.  Sailing is covered each night live, online, at 10pm PDT.  Stay home and watch your computer.  Unless you like basketball and beach volleyball.

Olympic Factoid: Like the amateur and peaceful Olympic games at the base of Mount Olympus, the Greeks also staged similar games on the Corinthian peninsula.  These Corinthian games later, in mid-1800s Britain, lent their name to the status of being an amateur sailor, and the term has stuck.  Some yacht clubs have even been named in honor of the spirit of those who compete in fairness and friendship just for the love of the sport.

British Olympic factiod:  For unclear reasons, the BBC has adopted Wu Cheng En's epic work "Journey to the West" and its lead character, the monkey god, as its emblem for covering the Olympics.  While this story (a brilliant Buddhist allegory)is a favorite of some of us, we must protest the blatant imitation of a Corinthian tradition of inappropriate treatment of simians.

    Calling All Curators
Commodore Johnson has asked that we put a call out for anyone who would like to take on the task of managing and cataloguing our extensive collection of artwork and artifacts.  In light of our recent success at the Lipton Cup in bringing some more silver home to our trophy cabinet, it's a great time to get our little "museum" in order.  Dick Slotow has been actively engaged in helping us maintain some semblance of order in the presentation of CYC past accomplishments.  Whoever might like to take on the task of watching over our treasures could certainly look to Dick for some guidance as well.

The artwork that is found throughout our facility is magnificent and along with our trophys serve as a fabulous reminder of the rich history of CYC.  In an effort to make sure these pieces are properly preserved, we also plan on exploring the addition of a humidity-controlled storage area.  If you are interested in learning more about this project, you may contact David at djohnson@capture-cam.com or (415) 725-3735.

Phillippe Kahn Brings More Racing Glory to CYC

It was announced earlier today that the CYC's own Phillippe Kahn has broken a 16 year in finishing the 2008 Pacific Cup Race!  Following is an article that provides some more detail about Skipper Kahn's marvelous feat...

    Pegasus Sets New Double-Handed
    San Francisco to Hawaii Record

HONOLULU, HI--(Marketwire - July 30, 2008) - The Waikiki Yacht Club announced today that Skipper Philippe Kahn, with co-skipper Richard Clarke of Canada, set a new record for the 2008 Pacific Cup race of 7 days, 15 hours, 17 minutes and 50 seconds. The prior record was set by Volvo Ocean Race winner Stan Honey in 1992.

Commenting on the record, Honey said, "Congratulations on beating my DH record from 1992, of 8 days, 20 hours, 47min set on the Santa Cruz 70 Mongoose. Nicely done!"

Crossing the finish line just before sunrise, the Pegasus Open 50 had the fastest elapsed time of all 61 boats, including fully crewed racing machines that ranged from 45 feet to 73 feet in length.

"Just the two of us, it's so rewarding and real," said Kahn. "We had a great side bet and competition with Dave Ullman and Adrienne Cahalan on Holua, a fully crewed SC-70. This is some of the best sailing that I have ever done. Richard is an awesome teammate!"

    A Fast, Wild Ride

The start Saturday was a picture-perfect afternoon, windy with a strong ebb tide. A powerful North Pacific gale hit the fleet during the first 36 hours of the race. There were breakages and injuries. "This is what sailing is all about -- endurance, survival, strength and intelligence. With gusts more than 40 knots, this race was a test for every crew. Richard and I are a great team. We really complement each other, and sailing double-handed is an amazing intense experience. You are on twenty-four by seven," stated Kahn.

Squall after squall and hole after hole, the skippers wondered if they made the right navigational decisions, especially just after sundown on July 23, when the Pegasus flying at 25 knots ran over a large fishing net, bringing the boat to a stop and putting the kite in the water, which ultimately wrapped around the keel. "Up until this point we'd been pretty lucky, but now we were in for trouble," Kahn said. "It was dark and we needed to get that sail off the keel. Because of the darkness, we couldn't dive in the ocean to free the boat, especially double-handed, so we did what we could from above, pulling, pushing, grinding, cutting, yanking and winching." Exhausted, but determined to not give up, the duo finally succeeded after 11 tries. The Pegasus continued charging toward Honolulu.

    The Sailboat and Crew

The Pegasus 50 is an Owen Clarke designed Open 50 acquired by Pegasus Racing in 2007. After an extensive refit, it was christened as Pegasus and launched in San Francisco. To train for the double-handed race, Kahn and Clarke developed all the skill-sets usually covered by a full racing crew. Ultimately they competed successfully against full racing crews in the Pacific Cup.

Kahn, a well-known technology visionary and most recently creator of MotionX applications for the Apple iPhone 3G, said, "The race isn't about technical equipment; it is about good old-fashioned navigation skills, which includes tracking the clouds and squalls. You must find the balance between sailing minimal distances and extending south to find more breeze. I've been in these high mid-Pacific ridges nine times before, but it is different every time. Luckily, I learned navigation skills from the best, Mark 'Rudi' Rudiger, one of the most sought-after ocean racing navigators in the world. Rudi passed away earlier this month; this race and record are dedicated to Rudi and his family."

    About the Pacific Cup

Started in 1980, the Pacific Cup race has attracted sailors of all stripes, from the hard-core ocean racer to the family ready and prepared for a true adventure. Stan Honey, Philippe Kahn and other luminaries in the sport have taken home Pacific Cup trophies, as have many family enterprises. The 2008 race was one of the most heavily attended in recent years, with 61 entries from 24 to 73 feet competing for a range of trophies including the Pacific Cup itself for best corrected time over the 2070-mile course from San Francisco to Honolulu. For more information, visit www.pacificcup.org.

    About Pegasus Racing

Pegasus Racing is a world-class one-design sailboat racing team made up of some of the finest sailors in the sport. Led by Philippe Kahn, successes range from winning the Melges 24 Worlds twice (2003 and 2007), to winning the Transpac (2001 and 2003) and setting the Pacific Cup double handed record (2008). For more information on Pegasus Racing visit www.pegasus.com and for more information on Philippe Kahn visit www.fullpower.com

Wednesday & Thursday Night Bistro Update

Next on the agenda for Wednesday Wine Night at CYC will be a local vintner, Cline Cellars, on August 6th.  You probably have driven by their tasting room hundreds of times when wending your way up to Sonoma.  And, unless you were burdened by the task of sheparding some very, very distant relatives from Ottumwa, Iowa through the wine country in search of vintage blush varietals, you quite likely haven't had the pleasure of enjoying the fine wines of Cline.  No excuses now!  Just come join us on next Wednesday and see what you've been missing.

Thursday Bistro, as always, awaits you!   As Yogi Berra might say, "If you don't come, then you won't be there".  That's not what we want!  Bring your shut-in friends and relatives down for some fun...it's a great cure for agoraphobia!!

       CYC Captures Lipton Cup

For those loyal readers of the Corinthian Crier you already know that the CYC entered four boats in the Lipton Cup Regatta last weekend.  What you may not have heard is that our boys done CYC good!

Roxanne and Charles James were victorious in taking the Big Lipton division with a 16 second margin in the first race and a mere 9 sec margin in the final race.  Kira, with Jim Erskine at the helm is awaiting the decision on an appeal that has been filed against Lotta'tude for sailing the wrong course.  If the appeal is upheld, Jim will be awarded second place in the Larry Knight division.  Bill Stucky's beautiful Bird boat, Polly, with the able assistance of Skipper Ted Goldbeck was tied for second at 7 points in the Little Lipton Division but lost on the tiebreaker. And our fourth entry in the Admirals Division, Rich Korman ably sailed Rubber Biscuit into a second place finish.

So, the Sir Thomas Lipton Perpetual Challenge First Place Trophy comes to the CYC. YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!!!!!  And the second place trophies Valhalla Cup and Treasurers Cup are also on the way.  The trophies will all be actually be awarded on November 3rd at the PICYA meeting at the Encinal YC.  All in all, an excellent CYC representation! And lots of silver....we may have to remodel and upgrade the CYC Trophy Cabinet!!  Great going CYC team!

Have you made your reservations for the CYC Clambake yet?  Don't be stuck sitting at home on a Saturday night heating up some Groton's Frozen Fish Sticks coupled with some crappy cheap blush wine just because you forgot to sign up!   The festivities get underway beginning at 5:00pm August 2nd with no-host cocktails.  The buffet dinner is served at 6:00pm and will continue until 8 with entertainment being provided by the "Left Coast Allstars" from 5:30 to 9:30.

If you really think that you're better off with Groton's Breaded and Battered Fillets, than don't reserve online at www.cyc.org or contact Frances in the Club office....we'll just savor our lobster without you!  Only kidding!  We hope to see you there on the 2nd.  Bibs provided.

We want to thank those who attended the wines of Chile along with this past Wednesday, July 23rd.  Our staff is in the process of surprising us with unannounced wine and food pairings.  Tastings are scheduled from 6 to 7 and the wines are available for purchase at the bar throughout the remainder of the week.

As always, Thursday Bistro night is available for your drinking and dining pleasure.  It's a great time to lay back, introduce friends to our fabulous club and contribute to your quarterly Club minimum!  If you're a member who maybe hasn't patronized the Club for awhile, come on down and add your happy face to the group on Thursday night.  It's a much better alternative to summer reruns on the telly!
Annual Joan Storer Women's Regatta Coming Up

Once again, Tiburon Yacht Club is pleased to host the Annual Joan Storer Women’s Regatta to be held at TYC on Paradise Cay on Saturday August 9th.  This is a perfect venue for experienced and not-so-experienced women crews and racers.  You are invited to dock at the newly remodeled Paradise Cay Yacht Harbor for the post-race social and prize-giving.

    CYC Speaker Series Returns

We want to draw your attention to our next next guest speaker at the very popular CYC Speaker Series scheduled on Thursday, August14th.

Imagine you are sailing down the California coast, about 5 miles offshore.  It's late afternoon, and the gray light filtering through the thickening fog is fading to black.  The wind is building past 30 knots, the waves are increasing in height, and you know you are in for a long, dangerous night.

This is the time when the preparation you have received from RYA Ocean Yachtmaster Instructor and ASA Ocean Passage-Making Instructor John Connolly gives you the confidence and skills you need to face these conditions.

Come hear John Connolly, head instructor for Modern Sailing School in Sausalito , as he shares his knowledge and love for heavy weather sailing along our California Coast . John holds a US Coast Guard 100 Ton All Oceans Master’s License, and has taught 97 advanced ASA certification courses along the challenging California Coast , primarily between San Francisco and Monterey Bay .  As an accomplished world sailor, John teaches an average of 6 to 8 advanced ASA courses a year in various places such as the South Pacific, Mediterranean , Thailand , Australia , New Zealand , the Seychelles Islands , Belize , Mexico , and the Caribbean .  With extensive experience in heavy weather, he has been written about in Blue Water Magazine, Cruising World, Sail Magazine, and Latitude 38.  As one of the leading experts on storm strategies, John has also published articles in Sail Magazine and, in conjunction with West Marine and John Rousmaniere, organized one of the largest safety events in US history.

Again, John will appearing in the ballroom at the Corinthian Yacht Club on Thursday, August 14.  Doors open at 6pm , and a buffet dinner will be available.  John's talk and video presentation will start at 7pm .  You may RSVP by going to www.cyc.org and clicking on 'Speaker Series' under 'Coming Up' on the CYC home page.  This should be a very enjoyable and educational talk.

We have had a number of people ask how they can receive the weekly edition of the Corinthian Crier.  Since none of these people will see this, if anyone asks you how to get on our mailing list tell them to make sure to register as a user on the CYC Members Portal and sign up by providing your email address.

As we've said in the past, the CYC website and, more importantly, the Members Portal offers a wealth of information and is a great resource.  Perhaps when they return from their respective sojourns, we can ask our resident IT pros, Michael Moradazdeh and Seth Evans to conduct a tutorial on how to make use of our growing technology platform at CYC!

A Day On the Bay with Easter Seals

A reminder that Easter Seals clients and their caregivers will venture out on the Bay this Saturday for their annual fundraising event.  Following their tour of the CYC "backyard", the Tiburon Fire Boat and the U.S. Coast Guard will treat all of us to an exciting demonstration of how they protect us from harms way.

    Lipton Cup Regatta Gets Underway

If you've been reading the Crier regularly, you know we have put together a hot shot team of four boats to represent CYC in the Lipton Cup Regatta on Saturday and Sunday.  Just in case you forgot, they are:

Roxanne (Charles James) in the PHRF 45-99 division, Kira (Jim Erskine) in the PHRF 100-156 cruising division, Polly (Bill Stucky/Ted Goldbeck) in the PHRF 157-206 division and Rubber Biscuit (Rich Korman) in the PHRF 207-270 division.

Around 3:30 on Sunday afternoon, there will be a "Welcome Home" reception at the Club for our returning water warriors.  Hope you can join in toasting and thanking Charles/Jim/Bill/Ted/Rich for going for the Cup on our behalf!

It's time again for the CYC Cruise over to the South Beach YC on July 26 & 27 and the good news is that there a still a few berths left.  As in the past, you have an opportunity to enjoy a 'double-header'.  Tickets are available to attend the Saturday night Giants game.  The great thing about the game is it doesn't matter if you're a Giants or A's fan....they're playing each other!  The game starts at 6:00pm and tickets are $40 each.  This is really a great event and a nice diversion from your 'normal' weekend.  Your hosts will be that dynamic duo, Pat Goss and Dale Weibel.  For further information, please contact Pat at patgoss@comcast.net or contact her at 789-5246.

CYC Annual 'Clam-Free' Clambake on August 2nd

One of our most popular summertime events, the CYC Clambake gets underway August 2nd beginning at 5:00pm with no-host cocktails.  The buffet dinner commences at 6:00pm and will continue til 8.  The fun doesn't stop then as we will be entertained from 5:30 to 9:30 by the "Left Coast Allstars".  So what if there are no clams, you can enjoy SHLOBOYSTERS.  Our seafood version of Turducken. or our Crustacean & Mollusk Scramble.  Reserve online NOW at www.cyc.org or contact Frances in the Club office if you have any questions.

The wines of Chile along with food pairing from the region will be showcased on Wednesday, July 23rd.  We haven't seen as many wine connoisseurs as we might have expected in the past couple of weeks.  Judging by the amount of wine that our members consume in the Club, we would like to see more of you come down one of these Wednesday evenings.   Tastings are scheduled from 6 to 7 and we have the benefit of experts educating us on both the varietal and the specific wines.

Also a reminder that Thursday night is Bistro night.  It seems like Thursday is becoming the new Friday in the workplace, so start the weekend early and join your friends and our most friendly bartendress, Wendy!

TCW Ladie's Night Out Wine Tasting

The Corinthian Women enjoyed a great off-site meeting at the home of Pat Goss last week by staging a blind wine tasting.  A total of 5 red and 5 white wines were tasted and the winners were:

Reds:            1st place - SATTUI 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon
2nd place - JOSEPH PHELPS 'Fog Dog' 2005 Pinot Noir
    Whites:         1st place - STAG'S LEAP 2006 Chardonnay

The event drew around 18 members and a good time was had by all...at least that's what they remember!  TCW is actively looking forward to attracting more women from CYC into their group and have planned an exciting event in August.  Stay tuned for more information on their 'Soiree' in a future issue of the Crier.

Coming Up This Weekend - July 12-13

Here's a bit more information and history for this weekend's Wooden Boat Show garnered from the Master Mariners website.  Don't miss this great event for a great cause!

    MASTER MARINERS BENEVOLENT ASSOCIATION

    2008 Wooden Boat Show
    Sunday, July 13, 2008
    Corinthian Yacht Club

    10:00 am to 4:00 pm

The annual Master Mariners Wooden Boat Show is a fun family event in a beautiful location, the Corinthian Yacht Club in Tiburon, CA. On Sunday, July 13th approximately 60 traditional sailing vessels will be on display with theirproud owners on hand to share a bit of their history.  The local chapter of the Traditional Small Craft Association will once again participate displaying some fine skiffs, dories, and whitehalls. The San Francisco Feetwarmers” will entertain the crowd playing lively jazz all afternoon and there will be activities for children on the deck making it a great outing for the entire family. Refreshments and a BBQ will be available. Boat show proceeds go towards the Master Mariners Benevolent Foundation which provides funding for sail training scholarships and skills associated with restoring traditional sailing craft. The MMBF supports several local organizations including the Spaulding Wooden Boat Center, Arques School and the Tall Ship Semester for Girls. Awards will be given to the well maintained vessels on display: Stone Cup, Corinthian Cup, and Peoples' Choice. Admission is $10 for adults, free for children under 12 accompanied by an adult.

About the Master Mariners Benevolent Association (MMBA):
The MMBA dates back to 1867 when it gained recognition after staging a successful boat race at the San Francisco Fourth of July Celebration. This became a popular Fourth of July tradition, as the never disappointing San Francisco winds promised an exciting race, and rowdy participants battled with fists and sails for the prize banner that read "Champion." The MMBA still holds an annual regatta on Memorial Weekend and crowns a champion at the awards party, in addition to a variety of other nautical-themed events.

And For You Serious Sailors Out There...

2008 Pacific Cup Counting Down to Start

The TransPac Biennial Race to Hawaii shoves off from the CYC on July 12th and the race organizers have announced the final starting lineup for the upcoming 2008 Pacific Cup.  A total of 61 boats will be competing making this one of the Race's largest fleets in years.

One of the many things that makes the CYC so special are the events where we have the opportunity to open our doors and hearts to those who otherwise might not experience the beauty and fabulous maritime amphitheatre San Francisco Bay blesses us with.

Once again, CYC and SFYC members will be making dreams come true. Each year, approximately 30 skippers volunteer their boats and their time to take Easter Seals clients and their caregivers out for a sail or a cruise on the Bay. The fun continues back at the Club with demonstrations by the Tiburon Fire Boat and the U.S. Coast Guard. We have most of our skippers and volunteers already lined up for this year. If you have any questions or are interested in supporting Easter Seals in other ways or would like to participate next year, contact Herb Meyer, Sharon Marsh Barr or Kathleen Barr.

This coming Wednesday, July 16th, we will be visited by a bit of Italy as we celebrate vini d'Italia and without a doubt, you will be able to feast on some creative '-ini', '-oni', and '-etti' dishes to complement the wines.  Another great producer of wines is Chile and that country will be showcased on Wednesday, July 23rd.  Besides having a chance to learn more about these wines and appropriate food pairings, you can check out the validity of an old legend....that a bit of Chile wine makes for a warm chick!  So, make sure to bring along your favorite partner and enjoy!

Also a reminder that on Thursday, July 17th, Jazz Night at the Bistro returns starring Bill Canada and his Paridise Cay hombres...The Bill Canada Experience will be treating us to an evening of fine jazz and mood music.

Finally, this coming Monday and Tuesday, July 14th and 15th are particularly special days in which to consider joining your friends at the CYC Club bar.  How could one forget that Monday is Quatorze Juillet or as we know it here in the States, Bastille Day?!  Another chance to break out your tricolore outfit and have a Ricard or two.  Tuesday is America's greatest pastime's All-Star game coming from Yankee Stadium.  Should be quite an event given the fact that this historic baseball monument will be no more following the end of the season and I'm sure there will be a lot of history brought out during the coverage.  A votre santé!!

We're always looking for new and good ideas that will generate activity amongst club members and maximize the use of our great Club.  With that in mind we encourage you to send those ideas to tpcote@pacbell.net and we will do our best to incorporate them into one of our Corinthian Crier issues.  I hope you're all having a wonderful summer and enjoy the CYC!

    V.2 - GETTING IT RIGHT!!
    July 3, 2008

A few corrections in the July 3 issue of the Crier are in order..

    • I've always been bad at math and when I did the square root of our two Herbs, I made an error.  As you probably know, Herb Meyer, the tireless advocate for the disabled actually started the Easter Seals Day on the Bay.  Our other Herb (Myers) has been an active participant in this event and still obviously remains esteemed and prominent.  My apologies to both of you!
    • Jeff McQueen will still be in charge of the relocation of boats in advance of the Wooden Boat Show from CYC to SFYC, not AFC.  Sorry for that, and never trust Spellcheck!
    • The Easter Seals Luncheon on July 19th will only be for the participants in the fundraiser.  CYC members will still be able to enjoy the fine food offered at the Pelican Grill.
                                                 HAVE A GREAT 4TH EVERYONE!!!

    The Corinthian Goes Wooden

Just a reminder that on July 10-13, our friends, the Master Mariners bring the Wooden Boat Show to the quaint CYC harbor.  Invite your friends and neighbors (along with you, of course) to enjoy the beauty of these works of art.  On Saturday evening from 6:30 to 9:30, the Dining Room will be serving a Special Caribbean Buffet along with music to provide a great backdrop to the dinner and something to accompany those suffering from 'happy feet'.  And on Sunday, the Master Mariners Sailors Breakfast will be served from 7:30am to 9:30am.  If you miss breakfast or just suffer from an insatiable appetite, the Master Mariners Pelican Grill Lunch will be open from 11:30am to 2:30 pm.

Also, just in from our Rear Commodore, Sharon Marsh-Barr:

"Harbor tenants on A,B,C lines need to make plans to move their boats during the weekend of the Wooden Boat Show. Options include: Pittsburg Cruise-out, exchanging slips with one of the Wooden Boats or moving their boat to the San Francisco Yacht Club. Jeff McQueen is coordinating all boats moving to the AFC. We appreciate your cooperation. If you return to CYC before the show is over, you can drop a hook or grab a mooring. We will shuttle you into the Club so you can see the boats TOO."

A note to any CYC cowboys...keep your spurs at the ranch as these boats bruise easily.

Looking forward to seeing you at our Wooden Wonderland!

For the first time in a number of years, the CYC has entered four member boats in the prestigious Lipton Cup.  Thanks to John Dodge, here's some history on this event.

"Steeped in tradition, the Lipton Cup (actual name: Sir Thomas J. Lipton Perpetual Challenge Trophy) is an historical race series that takes place in many sailing venues around the country, where yacht clubs compete against each other with one boat representing each club in several handicap divisions. The trophies are pretty spectacular - see above. A CYC yacht, “Maybe”, won the first Lipton Cup in the bay area in 1934, and although many members have raced over the years, our last winner was Keith Buck in “Petard” in 1975." (Ed. note:  It's rumored that Skipper Buck was unable to defend his title the following year, having suffered an undisclosed injury while hoisting himself upon his own Petard.)

The CYC has a strong entry of four boats in the four divisions of this year’s regatta: Roxanne (Charles James) in the PHRF 45-99 division, Kira (Jim Erskine) in the PHRF 100-156 cruising division, Polly (Bill Stucky/Ted Goldbeck) i
