Abandon Race: Nov 10. Also... Angel Island Closed.
In his final act as Rear Commodore, Allyn Schafer has Abandoned the final race of the Corinthian Challenge scheduled for November 10. His personal survey of the waters in which we would be racing showed a rather large amount of oil still in the water.
While the flushing action of the bay is helping to clear out our local waters, oil is likely being rereleased from the shoreline into Bay waters. Not only does traffic on the bay add to the harmful dispersal, but also oily water washing onto your deck would be either a nuisance or a danger, depending on how much you get.
Also, it's going to be a very light air day, and it may rain. Is it too early to make light of the situation? Perhaps.
The oil skimmers were at work in front of the Club, and special recognition to Ingo for heading out first thing Thursday AM to purchase an oil boom and get it deployed across our harbor entrance. We'll save it for the next one.
Volunteer to Help?
The Commodore and Commodorable (a chemical engineer from the petroleum industry) tried in vain to find a place to volunteer to help. BayKeeper seemed at first to be the only folks we found looking for assistance. You can go to their site to volunteer or donate. If there are other sites or organizations that can be helpful, please let me know so that members and friends can have a choice of outlets.
Just found this from the Coast Guard advisory statement: Members of the public who are interested in volunteering for wildlife recovery efforts are asked to go to www.owcn.org for more information. Information sessions on wildlife care activities and how the public can receive proper training to participate will be held tomorrow, Saturday Nov. 10, in the Bay Area. Details on the location and times of these sessions will be announced once confirmed. Before reporting oiled wildlife, please call 877-823-6926, and to report oil sightings, please call 985-781-0804.
See you at the Annual Meeting tonight. Maybe you can order a new drink called the Cosco Busan: Seabreeze and Oil on the Rocks. OOps, I did it again! Also the interesting question: If Angel Island is closed, how will Allyn and Kim get home?
