Oil, Veterans' Day, First Aid Class, Annual Meeting Update

Good Morning Members!

Oil

For those not immediately local to CYC, we're reporting that the CYC harbor remains boomed off (closed) as does the SFYC harbor and others around the bay. Big yellow floating booms protect various areas of the bay's shoreline from the oil.

The oil has broken up into ever-smaller globules and patches, unfortunately making clean-up harder and spreading more deeply into the environment. While the immediate danger to sailors is abating rapidly, our bird, fish, and other life on the bay will suffer. We can see from the window and on the AIS site that the cleanup vessels are on station 24/7. Apparently, volunteers are not yet being accepted. The club is monitoring the situation.

Veterans' Day

It is Veterans' Day (observed). Observe it. Fly a flag. Thank a veteran. Enjoy, exercise, and preserve the freedoms they worked to defend.

The club should be open today and also this evening for football

First Aid Class

Be prepared. That's somebody's motto. Or "always prepared" or something. Anyway, being prepared for first aid at sea is a darned good idea. Bill Brady has arranged a class. Sign up.

Annual Meeting

Andre Klein was given a standing ovation, a rousing send-off, and a titanium fishing reel. After 8 years as Port Captain, he was ready to cede the post to Tony Cooney, and cede he did. In fact, the there was a whole lotta ceding going on. Your outgoing officers: Port Captain Klein, Commodore Moradzadeh, and Directors Scully, Leonard, and Brady departed in yet another peaceful transition. Welcome new Commodore David Johnson, Vice Allyn Schafer, Rear Sharon Marsh Barr, and Port Captain Tony Cooney. Directors Stucky, Ames, Goss join Massey, Lauman and Jorajuria, with Kim Schafer serving as Secretary, and Harold Marsh serving as Treasurer. The vote was unanimous on the elected positions.

All by-law amendments passed. Many thoughtful and carefully considered points were made for or against some of the propositions, and we are assured that the Board and the committees will take those into account as they implement these. Thanks to all who participated in the debate in such a thoughtful manner

To general acclaim and approbation, Ted Goldbeck was announced as Sailor of the Year. Ted "Never Miss A Race" Goldbeck has a long history of racing in, and winning, CYC races as well as serving as a strong contributor to the club.

More in the Telltale. Not this one, the next one. Otherwise Deb Newton's head will explode.

FLASH: New shoreboat has arrived!

Commodore Johnson just called to tell me that the Shoreboat will be here in the next ten minutes. I almost rushed down in my leopard jammies, but will now go change into appropriate yachting attire to welcome the new, as-yet unnamed, RIB. It won't go into the water till the insurance is set, and it may well wait till the oil is gone too, though the skin should handle that fine...

Okay, that's it then. Carry on.
