Basic Racing Tactics & Strategy

Learn the subtle, and not so subtle, art of racing tactics — How to time your start, where to be on the start line, which side of the course is favored, how to approach and round a mark, how to prevail in a crossing situation, how to take advantage of wind shifts. Whether new to racing or need a tune-up, this is a must for the club racer.
Lecturer: Seadon Wijsen, North Sails
Seadon is a sales associate for North Sails’ Sausalito office. An avid Melges 32 sailor, he has been sailing and racing for 25 years in Europe, Japan and US, including SF Bay.

Basic Tides & Currents on the Race Course Tuesday, May 11, 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm
Any Bay sailor knows that currents are a huge part of sailing on the Bay. This clinic shows the fundamentals of tide and current as they affect your race performance, especially on our section of the Bay.
Lecturer: Jon Stewart, master rigger and racing tactician
Jon is a familiar face on the race deck, attending nearly every CYC club race. He has been racing for over 30 years on SF Bay and on oceans around the world. His knowledge of racing strategy, wind patterns, tides/currents is unparalleled.

You can’t expect to win if the ‘engine’ that drives your boat, the sails, are not tuned properly. Learn the finer points of sail shape and sail power — how to change the shape, how does ‘twist’ affect speed, when to employ the traveler or boom vang for optimum performance, and more.
Lecturer: Kame Richards, Pineapple Sails
Kame, is a founder of Pineapple Sails, specializing in high-performance racing and cruising sails for over 38 years. He has sailed the Bay for that long and has raced in top-rated, European regattas.

New to racing? Time to brush up on the rules? Are the rules overwhelming?
This clinic introduces you to the basic rules you will need for club races: Safety, Port/Starboard, Leeward/Windward, Overtaking Boats, Room at the Mark.
There will be Q&A session after the lecture.
Lecturer: Don Wieneke
Don has been racing on the Bay for over 30 years. He has been highly competitive in numerous classes and currently races Lulu, a J105. A US Sailing trained umpire and judge Don is well versed on rules and situations that challenge them on the racecourse.
